When? Friday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m.
Where? Bleser Park, 32800 Electric Boulevard, Avon Lake, Ohio 44012
Originally built by resident volunteers in the mid-1990s, ALPS was an all-wooden playground that, despite being well-maintained over the years, was removed in 2021 due to safety concerns. The new ALPS is an inclusive, multi-generational park that features all new playground equipment, a fitness loop, a four seasons sledding hill, and Laker’s Lookout, an elevated seating area where visitors can enjoy great views of Lake Erie.
“The ALPS project aligns with our vision to make Avon Lake the premier community for families along the shores of Lake Erie,” said Mayor Mark Spaetzel. “ALPS has already become a popular destination and will be a key community asset for generations to come. We are holding this special event to recognize the collective effort that made this project possible, and to formally dedicate the playground to the community it was built to serve.”
Phase 2 of the ALPS project was completed in late 2025. The first two phases of the ALPS project were made possible in part through sponsors’ support and grant funding, including a $350,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and a $69,816 grant from the ODNR NatureWorks program.
“We are thrilled to formally welcome the Avon Lake community to this long-awaited space,” said Avon Lake Recreation Director Erin Fach. “Our goal for the ALPS project is to create a safe, accessible, and engaging space that fosters creativity, connection, and community growth. We are grateful to the sponsors who have helped make our vision possible, because projects like this simply cannot be achieved through grant funding alone.”
Future phases of the ALPS project may include a challenge course, an adult fitness area, and additional play features. Sponsorship opportunities are available through the Avon Lake Friends of the Parks. For information, call 440-930-4130 or email alrec@avonlake.org.
