The Avon Lake Tree Commission (ALTC) is dedicated to helping you add more greenery to our streets and neighborhoods. The ALTC works with local utilities and provides clearance distances for the planting sites.
Street Tree Planting
The city has temporarily paused all new street tree plantings because we are launching an exciting City Tree Inventory project! Starting this summer, teams will be out in the field gathering data on all of our existing publicly owned street trees and available locations to plant new street trees.
What is the goal?: We want to make sure our urban forest grows beautifully, stays healthy, and is well-maintained. The data collected from this inventory will serve two major purposes:
- Care for Existing Trees: It will provide valuable management guidance so we can better care for, prune, and maintain the wonderful street trees we already have.
- Plan for the Future: It will be used to create a Master Street Tree Planting Plan to help us determine the best types of new trees to plant and the perfect locations for them to thrive.
When will plantings resume?
- Field data collection begins this summer.
- The inventory project will be fully completed on or before the end of the year.
Next Steps: After the inventory is completed a Master Street Tree Plan will be created. Once the Master Street Tree Plan is finalized, street tree plantings will be able to resume.
We appreciate your patience and enthusiasm for keeping our neighborhood green. Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses!
Tree Lawn Pollinator Gardens
Residents can help build a bio-diverse network that supports pollinators. Backed by research provided by the Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club, Avon Lake City Council passed an ordinance in February 2020 allowing tree lawns to be planted with native plants to become part of the National Pollinator Highway. This effort is supported by Congress and State governments. Residents interested in participating in the program can download the Pollinator Planting Permit.
